Jacka

/ˈdʒækə/ (say 'jakuh)

noun
Albert (Bert), 1893–1932, Australian army officer; awarded the Victoria Cross in World War I.
Bert Jacka was born at at Layard in Victoria, and was a timber forestry worker before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in September 1914. After training in Egypt he landed at Anzac Cove on 26 April 1915. Just weeks later, on 19 May, he won the first Victoria Cross awarded to an Australian in the war for his part in repelling a Turkish counterattack at Courtney’s Post. In August the following year, as an officer at the battle for Pozières, he performed an equally bold action for which he was awarded the Military Cross. At Bullecourt in April 1917 he won a bar to his MC for further brave individual work. In 1918 he was badly gassed, ending his combat career, and in 1919 returned home to Victoria to a hero’s welcome. He became mayor of St Kilda in 1930, but at about the same time both his business, which had been successful until the Depression, and his health began to fail.
